1.
Find a picture and identify the following elements of communication:
A.
Source, receiver: in this picture the person who is preforming
the speech is the source (encoder) and the audiences are the receivers (decoders).
B.
Potential source of noise: as in the picture, audience are gathered in
the conference room there can be a lot
of potential sources of noise, such as the echo of the speakers, whispers or
the convers of the other people around.
C.
Types of messages: in this
picture we can sense that the speaker is preforming a speech or presenting
something.
D.
Communication channel: the
encoder in this picture mainly uses the local channel and the formal
communication channel.
E.
Positive effects: as the
encoder is preforming a speech it basically shows that it is a positive effect
where all the audience is paying attention.
F.
Purpose: the purpose of this
communication can led us to a point that it may be a discovery of public goods
and understanding the society as there is a feedback from the audience as well.
2.”Communication
involves content and relationship dimensions”.
A) Based on this principle of communication
create a dialogue (interpersonal and not more than 10 utterances) including
some failures of communication due to content and relation aspect. Write a
second version of the dialogue where the communication problems do not occur.
B) Comment on the two versions you have
created.
1) Dialogue:
Daughter: mom I am going out today.
Mom: no you are not. You are grounded for
your low grades; you need to work them out.
Daughter: no way I am staying home tonight,
its weekend!
Mom: that is out of my concern, it is your
bad you brought low grades and that you aren’t going anywhere tonight.
Daughter: you can’t punish me for this
reason.
2) Dialogue:
Daughter: mom can I go out today?
Mom: my dear, you have to work out you low
grades.
Daughter: mom, please its weekend today,
let me go out today at least.
Mom: only if you promise to higher your
grades and work hard.
Daughter: I promise, I will.
Mom: fine you can, but be careful don’t be
late.
Daughter: thank you mom J
1)
Comment:
The first dialogue above
shows the conversation between a daughter and a mother. The stubborn daughter
is informing her mom that she is going out but in a very disrespectful way,
where her mother reacts in a very angry tone reminding her that she is grounded
for her low grades. The daughter insists and focuses in the content. Finally
her mother doesn’t agree.
2)
Comment:
In the second dialogue
above, this time the daughter asks permission to go out, this time she kindly
focuses in the content, she is aware of the fact she has responsibilities and
they both made settlements, which shows the rational aspect of the message. So
her mother’s respond is positive towards her daughter and allows her to go out
with a deal made for higher grades.
3. A) create a communication act in which
there are feedback, feed forward, contradictory messages and an attempt to
uncommunicate.
Jane: hey
sweetie can you come with me to pick a dress for my prom?
Kate: yes, of
course I would love too. Do you have
anything in mind?
Jane: yes, a
mini tight dress.
Kate: don’t you
think that would be too much for a prom?
Jane: no. why
should it be? Its prom!
Kate well
because you will be pulling a lot of attention and you won’t be able to move
properly.
Jane: you mean I should just get a simple/ordinary
dress just to be comfortable at prom so I won’t pull attention.
Kate: no, you
know I didn’t mean that. Of course I want you to get a nice dress.
Jane: it’s best
if I go with my mom and sister.
Kate: as you
like J
B) Comment on those issues.
Comment:
Dialogues above shows the conversation between
Jane and Kate, Jane asks if Kate would join her at picking up her prom dress,
while she starts saying what kind of dress she wants Kate gives her advice that
her dress will be over exaggerated for prom and Jane disliked her thought and they starts disagreeing as the
conversation gets further. Jane tells Kate that it’s better if she goes with
her mother and sister, as Kate responses with an irony by saying “as you like”.
The conversation
above contain all four components of communication (feedback, feed forward,
contradictory messages)
4. “Communication involves symmetrical and
complementary transactions”.
Exemplify this
principle of communication.
In the ELT
department every student gets a chance to make presentations, mostly group
presentations. In these groups presentation team work is one of the most
important factor. If one member of the group is not prepared and does continue
mistakes all the group members will be affected. This is called symmetrical
transaction.
In other way
around if the teacher is angry with the unprepared students and starts scolding
them for this process, the student wont reply
the teacher due to the respect as they are forced to do whatever the
teacher ask them to do because teacher has the full authority in the classroom.
This is called complementary transaction.
